The Peddie Family Name

I am currently researching the origins of my family name, PEDDIE, and also some of my recent ancestory. If any of the following details mean anything to anyone, please email me with any information.

There are more details on the PEDDIE Reseach Centre

Our bit of the Peddie family originated in Scotland - at least as far back as I know (which isn't very far) - in the Dundee (Angus) region.

My Father's name is: George Watson Peddie (born 25th Feb 1924, died 7th Aug 2001) He has a sister: Evelyn (ne้ Peddie) Hampton (born 10th Sep 1919)

Their Father was: David Donaldson Peddie (born ?, died 7th Sep 1941) He married an Agnes Watson on 17th March 1917 (my full name is David Alistair Watson Peddie).

David Donaldson Peddie spent time in the Indian and British Civil Service and served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during WW1.

He had two brothers: William (Will) Brodie Peddie and James and three sisters, Kate, Selena (Lena) and Elizabeth (Betty). Lena died young and is buried in Dundee.

William married Kate Hagan, and had four children, William (Bill), David Donaldson, Kathleen and Jean. At one time he kept the Kirk Style Hotel, in Dunning, Perth, Scotland.

I have compiled a family tree and if you are researching or just interested, please feel free to download it

In 1997, during a holiday in Scotland, while trying to track down some of the above information, we visited the village of Dunning.     At that time, all we knew was that William had run a hotel in the village which is S.W. of Perth.    So we drove to the village but had no idea where to start.    After a fruitless look around the church grave-yard we went into the local store and explained why we were there.    The store-keeper said, "The person you want to talk to is that lady just outside, she and her husband (Mr. and Mrs. Laing) are involved in the local history group."    We introduced ourselves to Mrs Laing and it turned out that when they were about 5 years old they could remember Will Peddie and his wife and they also had some more information! Amazing!    To top that we were standing just 25 yards from the Kirk Style Inn, which was the one he owned in the 1920-30's, but then it was called a hotel.

The photo (reproduced above), later sent to me by Mr. and Mrs. Laing, is of Dunning in 1927 and clearly shows the Kirk Style Hotel with the name, 'W.B.Peddie' above the door.

James (and there is some doubt about the name), the other brother, apparently went abroad to train horses in the Middle East, but so far investigations have drawn a blank.

My thanks to Susan Lester for a lot of the additional information above, following her discovery of our web site. The Internet does really work!

Finally, to bring everything bang up to date, I am married to Jan (Janet), and we have a son, Joel David Watson Peddie, and currently live in Birkenhead, Merseyside UK.

If any of the above means anything at all, I would be very grateful for any information that you might have.
