| Q:
a mason named PEDDIE?
Does anyone have any information on a mason named PEDDIE? [Wanda Peddie Raney - USA] My GGG Grandfather apparently was brought over from Scotland to Austin, Texas to work on the Austin State Capital Building. Apparently he was a Scottish mason and approximately 80 masons came from Scotland to work this job.
| A: Here is a partial answer.....
In my research I've found that mason/stone mason/marble mason was a common occupation of Peddies in Scotland, especially around the Edinburgh area I think. My own great-grandfather was a mason. One website I saw even says that Masons were sometimes called 'peddies', although that wasn't their surname! [thanks to:Barbara Peddie-New Zealand] ....? if anyone has more information, go here
| Q:
Is PEDDIESON part of the PEDDIE family?
In researching my grandfathers name, Peddieson. I [Laura Gumbel] found this in the google archives: Peddieston - Peddistoun 1 578 ; the proper name Peddie occurs frequently in the session records. Peddieston aka Peddiestoun, Peddiestown lies in Ross and Cromarty in Scotland. My grandfathers name was Peddieson. Is this part of the Peddie family? There is also a place in Ross and Cromarty called Peddieson. Is any history of this place available? Thank you. [Editor: this is a new piece of potential PEDDIE linkage, so if anyone knows just fill in the answer form - the link is at the top of the page]

| Q:
The Station Master at Glamis railway station
[Jane Birdsall - UK] We have some kind of Peddie relative, I think he lived in the second half of the 19th century who was supposed to have been the Station Master at Glamis railway station. I think he went to live in Knottingley (Yorkshire) with his daughter, who I think was called Grace. I think we may have a photo of him meeting the Queen Mother's parents (grandparents?) but has mislaid it. I would love to know whether this was true but can't find out! Can anyone help?

Does anyone want this?
I have a decrepit copy of Scott's "Tales of a Grandfather", which, acccording to the sticker inside, was a prize won by my grandfather, James TODD, on 26th June 1879, when he was at Sharp's Educational Institution, Perth. It is signed by Robert PEDDIE, teacher. Does anyone want this, to see what their ancestor's hand writing was like? It's free to the first comer, but I'll expect postage, as the book is quite heavy. I am *not* researching this grandfather,as he had far too many cousins! Contact me at: vivpritchard@ntlworld.com

| Q:
A. Peddie the Artist
Can anyone shed light on an artist named, A. Peddie, who produced watercolour illustrations for Blackie Publishers during the 1950's? The paintings are related to Old Testament stories. A: Could the first initial be T. rather than A.? My great-uncle,
Tom Peddie was an illustrator of many books (some of which I've collected) up to and during the period mentioned. He usually signed his work in
capital letters, and I could verify a signature or even his style. He also had illustrations in Strand magazine, internal work in Thriller Comics
library, and on many post-cards.
| If anyone wants to contact me I'm on the genealogy page (as Kim Vale though I'm usually still Kim Peddie). |

| Q: More on various Peddies, Artists
This from Brian (Australia): In relation to "F" Peddie the artist, I suspect the answer is the same as for "A" Peddie the artist. I was always told that my great grandfather, Tom Peddie, painted murals on the Queen Mary. I also have found references to him as a muralist and mentor for other artists. My grandmother had drawings by him including a self portrait, and he published a book about drawing and painting. I found a copy of this book in the Edinburgh University library. I found a reference to Tom's mentoring at www.caledonianartsandcrafts.com . Referring to "David Stratton Watt one of the most prominent and highly regarded living artists in Scotland today", Caledonian Arts & Crafts says: "At eighteen David became an apprentice in the Renaissance manner to a very good but underestimated mural artist Tom Peddie whom David greatly admired both as a man and as a painter. David was Tom's assistant for ten years". This would take us up to 1940. My grandmother had artwork by Tom Peddie. I particularly remember a charcoal or pencil self-portrait. Tom wrote a book about drawing andpainting, which I perused in the Edinburgh University Library.
| A: So, are A, F, W or Tom the same person or not? more info please!

| Q: (from the Webmaster)The Jamaican Connection
There appears to be a significan Jamaican connection with PEDDIE. In recent times, more than 3 people with Jamaican Peddie ancestors have contacted me requesting info. 3 Peddie brothers may have come to Jamaica from either Scotland or Ireland back in colonial times. Other PEDDIEs clearly went to Jamaica at various times and married locally. I do know there is a, Col. Peddie, in Jamaica and I have tried to contact him - unsuccessfully. If anyone knows more do use the form on the pedquestions page.
