It' really offensive when someone uses the name of a loved one out of context. But today, in all levels of society, when someone wants to let off steam, you will very likely hear.....
Oh J**** C*****
It was all going so well, the last nail was being banged in and, AARRGGHHH!!!, it's your thumb nail that gets the treatment. Chances are that the first words from your mouth would have been, "Oh Christ!", or, "Jesus Christ" or something similar. It's probably the same when the IRS catch up with your tax returns, or you get a speeding ticket.

How is it that you never hear someone curse by using the name of Mohamed, Joseph Smith, or Bhudda? Ever strike you as odd?

So, why Jesus Christ? It doesn't really make any sense. Who is this person, whose name for many people is nothing more than a convenient swear word?

You see, the name, "Jesus Christ" is the name of salvation. "Jesus", in Jewish, is "Yeshua" which means, "Salvation", and "Christ", means, "Messiah", or "Promised One". So, not just any old name picked out of a hat, but a name that is important, very important. The Bible says that there is no other name given to people whereby we shall be saved.

So, back to the original question, why has it become a swear word, a curse?

Perhaps there is someone with a vested interest in denigrating the name of Jesus Christ; but who? Someone for whom the very mention of the name is an abomination, for whom the name spells death, not life. What better way to rub this name in the dirt than to see it adopted as an everyday curse, and to divert your attention away from the real meaning, and the real person.

So, what about you? Do you misuse the name of Jesus Christ as a curse? If you do you are commiting blasphemy. Yes you are! Instead of mis-using Christ's name, why don't you discover the real person behind the swear word? You might like to check out our little quiz page.

In closing, it's interesting to think for a moment about how and where we learn to swear? It starts very early, and in the most obvious place - the home. Who teaches children to swear, or not to swear? Parents or Guardians do!

Here's a comment from one Mother, in the news a while ago for having a son who has been 'excluded' from school no less than 65 times, who clearly hasn't discovered this truth;

"I swear a lot, but that doesn't give him the right to do it as well".

So wrong, and so unknowing!
